Several Italian phrases are used in "The Gondoliers". The following is a guide to their meaning.

—Early Act 1 (Fiametta, Vittoria, and Antonio)

Dolce far niente — pleasant inactivity

Contradicenta — disagree

—When Marco and Giuseppi first enter, they greet the women and in turn are greeted in the following manner:

Buon giorno, signorini — Good day, ladies

Gondolieri Carissimi — Dear Gondoliers

Siamo Contradine — We are only peasants

Servitori Umilissimi — Your most humble servants

Per chi questi fiori? — For whom are these flowers?

Per voi, bei signori eccellentisimi — For you, most good and excellent gentlemen

O ciel! — Oh heaven!

Buon girono, cavalieri — Good day, noble sirs

Siamo Gondolieri — We are only Gondoliers

Io tiamo — I love you

Poveri Gondolieri — Poor Gondoliers

—In the finale, the men sing two Gondolier's cries:

Preme — Push in or press down (the oar)

Stali — Stop (your gondola)
